BBC: More Fighting Over In Game Purchasing
So, mobile apps are great – I think we can all pretty much agree on that. And while it is true that most apps are shit, there are more than enough gems to keep us coming back – looking for more. Which is ironic because this fight or row (as the British call it) is over gems that players can purchase in-game via their parent’s accounts. Simply put, the new My Little Pony game makes use of Gems that you can purchase with real cash. Then it puts it in the hands of children and watches what happens.
Of course, I saw the company’s claim that the game is intended for Bronies, which why in-game purchases are so easy to make. And as I have stated before Bronies are almost all Grown-ups. Still, it is reasonable to assume that a game that is based off of My Little Pony will attract children. Children who haven’t quite mastered the concept of money or impulse control. And I am sure that there are many parents who simply assumed that the official My Little Pony game was safe. Logical, yet flawed.
I have tried the My Little Pony Game (Click here to view on Amazon) and I have to say that I didn’t like it. It was boring and dull. It seemed all it was about was making money and using gems. Not a whole lot of depth there for me. And while I do enjoy simple games like Garfield’s Diner, I just didn’t like this one. I did like the fact that the original voice actors are here, but there just wasn’t enough to keep me. And while this was true for me, I could see how both children & Bronies would love this game.
If there is a possibility that children would play this game then it is the responsibility of makers to respond accordingly. Fine, don’t make it free-to-play – charge for it! You will still make lots of money and you help parents who pay for your products. After all Hasbro, you want them to continue to consume your other products, right? Is this worth alienating the people who buy your toys?
Who knows, maybe it is . . .
My Little Pony mobile phone game in-app payment row
December 6 2012 Last updated at 12:36 ET
From: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-20629245
Complaints have prompted mobile phone game developer Gameloft to reduce the cost of playing My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.
The “freemium” game is free to play or gamers can pay to progress faster. But some players say it can take years to finish without spending cash.
Campaigners worry about the number of such freemium games aimed at children.
But Gameloft said the complaints were from older users known as “bronies”, not from children or their parents.
A “brony” is the term used to describe the adult fans of the My Little Pony game and of the TV show of the same title.
The game can be downloaded free from Apple’s App store or the Android equivalent, Google Play.
It involves building and managing the town of Ponyville. Despite being free, players have the option to pay to progress faster, using the game’s premium currency, gems.
‘Frustrated’ users
The last pony, needed to finish the game, used to cost 500 gems – the equivalent of £34 ($44) – and some users complained on forums that it was extremely difficult and took too long to get the amount of gems required without paying.
“Looking at the ponies it seems it would take over 100 dollars in cash to unlock everything, which seems utterly ridiculous,” said one player, pinkuchuu, on a web forum.
The complaints were first described in an article on technology blog CNET, which was then approached by Gameloft.
Lewis Digby from Gameloft’s UK branch told the BBC the company responded to comments of “a selected few hardcore older fans of My Little Pony who were wanting to progress through the game very quickly”.
Free or freemium?
He said the company dropped the price for the most expensive pony, Rainbow Dash, from 500 gems to 50 gems (£5, $8).
But he added that the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic game had had excellent feedback from its main audience, young girls.
“People confuse free games and freemium,” he said.
“We are not creating free games here, these are games with a free access, but we have to sell in-game content if we want to be profitable.
“But you can enjoy our games for free – it’s about giving our customers the option. It’s up to them to decide if they want to play more regularly and progress through the game quicker. They can pay for in-game content, but you can enjoy it very much without paying anything.”
Marc Gander of the Consumer Action Group said that it was not uncommon to see costs pop up in mobile games for children that parents at first thought were free.
“I think that any parent who is suddenly faced with having to say ‘No’ to their child or else foot the bill for what they thought was a free game would be justified in feeling that they had been mugged,” he said.
Earlier this year, Apple was sued by parents over another freemium app, Smurfs’ Village, arguing that it was too easy to rack up huge bills on iPhones without parents’ consent. The case is still active.

Jerry Springer Want To Do An Episode About BRONIES?
I don’t know if this happened or not, but I think I’d watch this episode. DAMMM!!! I GOTTA STOP BEING SO OBSESSED WITH BRONIESS!!!! oh, wait that’s never gointa happen . . .
Jerry Springer Want To Do An Episode About BRONIES?
On Tuesday, the Jerry Springer show tweeted “Are you a brony and your lover objects?” This means they want to do a show on Bronies, the adult fans of the Hub network’s My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. It shouldn’t be a big deal, and I’m sure they’ll treat the Bronies with the upmost dignity.

“So you like to bang out on baby cartoon horse butts? Tell me more about that.”
(source)But the Bronies aren’t going to fall for it. They’ve sent out a warning, letting other Bronies know to avoid media appearances like this, writing in the Steam group Emergency Broadcast System that aren’t trying to give positive exposure to fans of My Little Pony. They’re trying to mock us.”

You don’t say?
(source)And we know why Jerry Springer’s interested—there’s a weird sexual aspect to the Bronies. But come on, what even is weird anymore? Everyone’s got their stuff. For instance, I’m into girls with big noses. I have a friend who can’t date brunettes. I don’t know, he just doesn’t find them attractive! So what reason do we have to judge Bronies for being in to cartoon horse butts?

Right. The reason is ALL THE REASONS.
(source)But beyond this weird sexual element, the reason Bronies are so ridiculed is because so many of them define themselves as Bronies. And that’s why the bronies needed to warn each other—the group seems to feel like they need “positive exposure”. Ultimately, Bronies don’t need positive exposure any more than guys who play Mega Man 2 need positive exposure—it’s only one aspect of your life and attacks on it are not attacks on you. We can’t let ourselves be defined by any one thing, be it My Little Pony or Mad Men, archery or breakfast cereal, italian cooking or frisbee golf.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD don’t make your thing frisbee golf.

Videos That Make You Smile: Alley Says – Bronies Do Go To Walmart
So, I have been working at Walmart for a while now. Something I enjoy a a fair amount. After all, there are not many that can say they helped open a brand new Walmart! Being aware of how unique a process this was, I recorded a audio diary of the process (almost at it’s completion). In the meantime, I recorded this sampler to wet your taste-buds as to what is to come. Enjoy!

News: bronys gather at “Brony Con”
So, I make Brony Jokes. DUH!!!! If you have been following my blog for any length of time you would know that. Bronies are awesome. Bronies are scary. Bronies are friends of mine. Bronies are strangers to me. Bronies are so many things but they are generally not talked about by the public. Sure, they will from time to time talk about Furries in general, but Bronies? No. Not at all. Until this article at least.
Now, before you start reading I want to mention a couple of other things : First, this was a top story on Yahoo the day it came out. Sadly, I do not have a shot of it that day (but if you do, send me a link via comments), I didn’t even see it! I was pointed to this article from a friend of mine (non-brony friend) who told me about it position on yahoo. So, I can’t say with complete confidence that it did happen. But I believe that it did.
Second, I love the Brony they choose to feature first thing. His costume is horrible. He looks like a freak. Which says to anyone, “Come look at the Freaks!” Which is pretty much the tone of this piece. Enjoy!
Guys who like My Little Pony gather for ‘BronyCon’

SECAUCUS, N.J. (AP) — Dale Fjordbotten is a proud “My Little Pony” fan, with the shiny blue body suit and yellow lightning bolt, blue wings and blue tail to prove it.
Like many “Bronies” — boys and men who like the cartoon “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic”— the 25-year-old college student turned out over the weekend for “BronyCon Summer 2012″ at the Meadowlands Exposition Center, which drew 4,000 men, women, boys and girls, many in colorful wigs and costumes.
“I thought about what people would say. ‘It’s creepy. It’s weird. It’s a … show for little girls,’” said Fjordbotten, from Staten Island, N.Y. “It’s just a great show … the story line, the plot, the beautiful animation.”
Bronies say they’re a misunderstood lot who’ve gotten a bad rap from the media. They’re all about the show, friendship, love and tolerance, and they have no bad intentions, they say.
“I discovered that there’s nothing to be ashamed of being a Brony,” said 19-year-old James Penna of Mastic in Long Island, N.Y. “People are into what they’re into.”
Outside the convention center, young men danced and sang along with songs from My Little Pony cartoon that blasted from loud speakers as a video screen on a large truck showed the show’s characters. One observer said it almost felt like a Grateful Dead concert.
Inside, vendors sold stuffed ponies, pony accessories, pony signs, pony hats and just about every pony item imaginable. Stars who do the show’s voices signed autographs and gave speeches.
Staff appeared to be a little overwhelmed at times. It was just over a year ago when BronyCon attracted about 100 people to some meeting rooms in New York City. Now there are thousands of Bronies across the country.
Hasbro released the first My Little Pony toys in 1983, and they led to television specials, a film and the first TV series from 1986 to 1987.
The brand stuck around through the years. But along came animator Lauren Faust, who was hired by Hasbro and sparked new life to My Little Pony when she created the “Friendship is Magic” series.
Faust had worked on “The Powerpuff Girls” and “Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends” before dreaming up the land of Equestria, where My Little Pony characters like Twilight Sparkle, Apple Jack, Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie get into all kinds of adventures.
Faust told The Associated Press at BronyCon on Saturday that she never imagined the show would be such a hit with teenage boys and young men. She said her main target was little girls, but she hoped to draw in moms and perhaps some boys with strong characters and compelling story lines.
“We live in a society where saying that something is for girls is the equivalent to saying that something is stupid, or saying that something isn’t worthwhile,” Faust said.
“I think that’s awful and I think that kind of attitude needs to be changed,” she said. “And these men are doing it. … They’re proud that they’re forward-thinking and modern enough to look past this misogynistic attitude.”
Faust said she, like the Bronies, is disturbed at the negative images some people have about men who like the show.
“There are a lot of people who when they first hear about men watching a show for little girls, they’re taken to a creepy place,” she said. “They think there’s something wrong with that, something devious about it. I think that’s unfortunate.
“I don’t think you have to have bad intentions to like little girls or to like the things that they like,” Faust said. “And it’s upsetting to me that people jump to those conclusions. I think it’s unfair to men and I think it’s unfair to girls and women.”
To set the record straight about Bronies, Faust, John de Lancie and others are producing a documentary that filmed over the weekend at BronyCon. De Lancie is the voice of Discord on “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic” and is perhaps best known for playing “Q” on “Star Trek: The Next Generation.”
Zac North traveled from his hometown of Dayton, Ohio, to be with fellow Bronies in New Jersey this weekend. He dressed as his favorite character, the antagonistic Discord, wearing a hooded and multicolored costume complete with a dragon tail, since Discord is a pony-dragon hybrid.
Why does he like the show?
“It’s colorful and innocent, which is something I don’t have in my life,” the 26-year-old Sam’s Club worker said. “I like the community away from the show.”
Twenty-year-old My Little Pony fan Gabby Pantaloni of Hershey, Pa., said she was kind of shocked that so many guys like the show, as she stood in a line at BronyCon to get her picture taken with other enthusiasts dressed like her favorite character Rarity.
“After watching the show, I could see why anyone of any age would like it,” she said. “I think it just makes us all feel like kids again. Some of us are afraid of growing up. We’re all just kids at heart.”

Videos That Make You Smile: Bronies React to Season 2 Finale
Okay, so it’s a little faked but it is still funny. And it actually points out some of the weirdness that Bronies specialize in. Trust me, I have seen this behavior before – only in large groups and that was far scarier. Still, this is worth a watch even if you do not watch the whole thing . . .
I found this video, so no links today!
Videos That Make You Smile: Interview with Tara Strong
Okay, I try to prevent way too much Broniness from getting onto this blog, cause Bronies are scary and they should be kept at arms length. Still, out of the rest of the fur community, Bronies make the best videos. Sad, isn’t it?
Anyway, today’s video is an interview with Tara Strong, the woman who voices Twilight Sparkle. Even if you don’t care about Ponies, this is a great interview to listen to if you are considering voice work.
This time the source is my friend Twilight Pony, so go to his site now!
